STOEP STORIES - TALES FROM THE KAROO
Published by the Graaff-Reinet Heritage Society
SO WHAT”S NEW!!
Reporting from Graaff – Reinet in 1859
“Farmers and travellers should be on their guard as gun stealing is quite a common practice and the thieves have become quite skilful at such work. On the night of 24th March a fine double barrelled rifle was taken out of a wagon standing in Donkin Street and another gun was cleverly extracted from a wagon that stood alongside. However this thief being disturbed by one of the inmates of the wagon calling to know who was there he left the gun leaning against the forewheel and also his Jim Crow Hat. A reward of five pounds had been offered for the discovery of the thief”.
Double parking and gun theft it’s all been done before!
