Professor Rubidge obtained his BSc, honours, and master's degrees in palaeontology and geology at the University of Stellenbosch, and his PhD from the then University of Port Elizabeth, now Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU). He was a palaeontologist at the National Museum in Bloemfontein, then became the director at the Bernard Price Institute for Palaeontology at Wits University.
The Kitching Fossil Exploration Centre in Nieu-Bethesda, and the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site both benefitted from Prof. Rubidge's involvement, he being involved with the development of both facilities.
