Roof de Karoo Mountain Bike Event
Date: Thursday, 4th April 2019 to Sunday, 7th April 2019
The Roof de Karoo is a stunning two-day 200km mountain bike traverse. It is the proud product of the Mountain Zebra Camdeboo Protected Environment(MZCPE). This mountain biking adventure will journey over plateaus grazed by herds of antelope, cross desolate stretches of dramatic Karoo landscape with a unique diversity of fauna and flora and navigate mountain ridges revealing natural amphitheatres to where earth meets sky.
The traverse will present awesome panoramic views stretchinging for miles on end.
The 2018 event of the Roof de Karoo will be from the 5th - 7th of April 2018, exploring parts of the 268 000 hectares of stunning natural beauty of the Protected Enviroment. The MZCPE was created to protect the critical biodiversity of the area that lies between the Mountain Zebra National Park and the Camdeboo National Park in the Greater Karoo. The adventure trail is held in partnership with SANParks and is the first of its kind in the area.
Participating teams of two depart from the Mountain Zebra National Park campsite early Friday morning in the crisp Karoo air and end under the shadow of the imposing 2430m high Nardou mountainpeak. After 98 kilometres and an elevation gain of 1260m, the cyclists can relax under the shade of the poplar trees and cool off in the stream at the source of the Great Fish River. Day 2 starts with a climb and descent over Nardou on the old ox-wagon track. Cyclists are rewarded with a downhill gradient criss-crossing the Sundays River through private game farms, finishing at the Winterhoek campsite 102km later in view of the Valley of Desolation in the Camdeboo National Park.
Entry fees include 3-nights tented accomodation and all meals (breakfasts, suppers, water and feeding stations along the route). With stunning views to marvel at while on the bike, an opportunity to camp out under the Karoo star-studded skies and experience true Karoo hospitality and cuisine prepared by the local farmers, this event is as special as the area where it takes place.
Non-participating loved ones are encouraged to support the event and embrace the opportunity to discover the other gems found in the area. The organizers will make special arrangements for supporters dependant on availability of accommodation.
Don’t delay to book your place for this special event. A maximum of 50 team slots are available for the event. Entries close on Friday, 1 March. The entry fee is R4 000 per person or R7 500 per two-person team. The cost includes all meals, accommodation, medical support, a helicopter flip and a goodie bag.
