"Dazzling Blue Skies and a Million Stars
My partner and I have just returned from a 6 day farm stay in the Karoo. The deep peace I found still resonates with me, making me feel like I have regained some of the life perspective we all lose in the hurley burley of city life.
Our farm stay was at Groenvlei Guest Farm, 40 scenic minutes outside of the wonderful historic town of Graaff Reinet. For history buffs, the farm itself is a wonderland: the buildings march forward from the late 1700’s, and there are many historical artifacts on display in the enchanting communal pub and venue.
Groenvlei is a working Merino and cattle farm, but you are able to walk and cycle pretty much at will around its 10000 ha. The days were beautiful, with the brilliant blue skies of the Karoo, the sunlight glinting on the many koppies that surround the farm, and the warm smells of veldt and Karoo plants. Nights were cool, but fireplaces abound, and it is well worth while venturing outside for a drink under the amazing canopy of stars.
There is much to do and see in the surrounding area. We spent a day in Nieu Bethesda: the famous and fascinating Owl House is just part of the interest here, as the town abounds with history and more than a touch of artistic quirkiness. And good food! We also spent some time wandering around Graaff Reniet with its 220 national historical monuments, as well as many delightful eateries. We will be going back, as there is still the Camdeboo National Park, the Valley of Desolation, the rest of Graaff Reniet (we did not get to the historic Drostdy Hotel), and many other day trips.
We found that days on the farm were so peaceful and restoring, we did not really want to spend a lot of time touring. We read, walked, ate, and just sat in comfort watching the hills.
Accommodation is very warm and inviting. There are a number of self catering units, as well as a camping facility with excellent ablution blocks. And not to mention - again! - the wonderful old pub / gathering venue! This farm stay is great for individuals, as units are very private, but will also be wonderful for groups as the units can be joined together. It would also make a fabulous wedding venue.
The young hosts, Sula and Johnny, are very welcoming and kind: nothing is too much trouble! They’re both very knowledgeable about this richly historical part of the country and are happy to share stories with their guests. Johnny’s family traces their history back quite a few generations in the area, and he is a fine story teller!
I will be returning soon to this magical corner of the Karoo for some soul restoring, and some healthy walking in the clean air.
Pack up your walking shoes, your mountain bikes, your binocs, and join me!
