Karoo Kurios Now Open
Friday, 13th November 2020
Karoo Kurios, formerly known as African Adventure Curios & Crafts, has relocated to new premises at The Old Library Museum.
A range of affordable and interesting items are available for sale and would make ideal stocking fillers or Xmas presents. There are fridge magnets, bracelets, earrings, African tot glasses, lovely beaded Xmas tree decorations and much more!
They stock a large collection of hand embroidered wall hangings, cushion covers and bags from the Kaross Empowerment Project in the Letsitele area.
The Kaross Project was launched in 1988 by Irma van Rooyen. Mrs Van Rooyen got to know the local migrant workers through her citrus farm in the area. The people there are mainly Northern Sotho and Tsonga people, who traditionally embellish fabrics with embroidery, having been introduced to the craft many generations back by missionaries’ wives. She saw an opportunity for people to have a stable form of income from this, and the project has gone from strength to strength.
There is also a range of beadwork and basketry from rural Kwazulu-Natal.
